We Are a Publisher, Not a Book-Production Assembly Line
There is an important difference between producing a book and publishing one.
A book can be professionally formatted, uploaded to online retailers, and technically available worldwide without ever receiving meaningful publishing oversight.
At Purple Diamond Press, every manuscript is evaluated before it is accepted.
We consider the story, audience, positioning, marketability, production requirements, and whether the project is a strong fit for our publishing program.
That selectivity matters.
Our goal is not to publish the greatest possible number of books. Our goal is to build a catalogue we believe in and maintain professional standards across the Purple Diamond Press name.
Authors Have a Voice—But They Also Have a Publisher
Authors should be involved in the creation of their books. We believe strongly in that.
But professional publishing also requires professional judgment.
Our authors participate in decisions throughout the process while working alongside editors, illustrators, designers, and publishing professionals who understand what a book needs to succeed in its intended market.
That means we may recommend a different cover direction. We may identify a manuscript issue that needs additional editing. We may suggest changes to illustration concepts, pricing, metadata, trim size, or positioning.
Why?
Because our responsibility extends beyond completing a project.
We protect the author, and we protect the book.
Every title carries both the author’s name and ours.
Professional Human Editors Matter
Editing is not a box to check before publication.
It is one of the most important investments an author can make in a manuscript.
Purple Diamond Press requires professional editing and connects authors with experienced editors appropriate for their projects. Rather than treating editing as an invisible step bundled into a package, we believe authors should understand who is working on their manuscript and the expertise that professional brings to the project.
We also believe publishing remains a human creative process.
Technology can support publishing workflows, but it does not replace the judgment, sensitivity, experience, and collaboration of a professional editor.
Children’s Book Illustration Shouldn’t Be an Afterthought
Illustration is one of the largest investments involved in creating a professional picture book—and one of the most important.
Purple Diamond Press works with a curated network of professional illustrators representing different artistic styles and price ranges.
Authors can participate in selecting an illustrator whose work fits both the story and their budget, while Purple Diamond Press provides production oversight throughout the illustration process.
That oversight matters.
Illustrations must do more than look beautiful individually. They must tell a cohesive visual story across an entire book. Character consistency, pacing, composition, page turns, typography, bleed, trim, and print requirements all affect the finished product.
We do not use AI-generated artwork as a substitute for professional children’s book illustration.
We Believe Global Reach Should Be Accessible
For some books, reaching another language market can be an important extension of the original publication.
Purple Diamond Press offers authors access to professional Spanish translation and the production support necessary to develop additional editions when appropriate.
Translation is more than replacing English words with Spanish ones.
Children’s literature requires attention to tone, meaning, age appropriateness, rhythm, cultural context, and the relationship between the translated text and existing illustrations.
Our objective is to help authors thoughtfully expand their readership without turning an additional-language edition into an unnecessarily complicated publishing process.
Marketing Should Create Opportunities Beyond Launch Day
A book does not stop needing attention after publication.
Purple Diamond Press approaches marketing as an ongoing process that can include launch planning, review opportunities, publicity, educational outreach, digital marketing, events, school opportunities, institutional partnerships, and additional promotional services depending on the book and publishing program.
Not every marketing opportunity is appropriate for every title.
That is precisely why we do not believe in treating book marketing as a generic checklist.
A classroom-focused picture book requires a different strategy from a family read-aloud. A social-emotional learning title may have opportunities with educators and school counselors. A book addressing disability representation may have natural connections with advocacy organizations, nonprofits, hospitals, and community partners.
The strategy should follow the book—not the other way around.
Distribution Means More Than Being Listed Online
This is one of the most misunderstood concepts in publishing.
A book being available for a bookstore to order is not necessarily the same thing as having professional trade distribution and sales representation.
Purple Diamond Press has expanded its trade capabilities through Independent Publishers Group (IPG), one of the leading independent book distributors in the industry.
That relationship provides eligible Purple Diamond Press titles with access to professional sales and distribution infrastructure reaching the book trade.
But we also believe authors deserve realistic expectations.
Distribution creates access and opportunity. It does not guarantee that every bookstore will stock a book, that every library will purchase it, or that sales will happen automatically.
Professional publishing means preparing the strongest possible product for those opportunities—and understanding the difference between availability and active market representation.
We Think Beyond Retail Bookstores
Some of the most meaningful opportunities for children’s books happen outside a traditional bookstore.
Purple Diamond Press develops books with potential audiences that include:
* Schools and educators
* Libraries
* Nonprofit organizations
* Literacy programs
* Corporate partners
* Community organizations
* Families
* Institutional buyers
Our history has shown us the value of thinking beyond one-book-at-a-time consumer sales.
A children’s book can become a classroom conversation, a community initiative, an educational resource, a sponsored literacy program, or the beginning of an entire series.
We want authors to think about what their books can become—not merely where they can be listed for sale.
Additional Opportunities Should Expand a Book, Not Simply Increase a Bill
Authors may eventually want to take their books further.
That can mean a Spanish-language edition, additional formats, expanded marketing, review campaigns, educational materials, special editions, or other opportunities appropriate for the title.
Our philosophy is straightforward:
Additional services should create additional value.
We believe authors should understand what they are purchasing, why it is being recommended, and how it supports the larger publishing strategy for their book.
More services do not automatically make a better publishing experience.
The right services, at the right stage, for the right book do.
Publication Day Is Not Goodbye
One of the most important questions an author can ask a prospective publisher is:
What happens after my book is published?
Publishing should not end when files are uploaded and a book becomes available for purchase.
Books need time to find readers.
Authors grow. New opportunities emerge. Schools discover titles months after publication. Organizations develop new initiatives. A successful first book may lead to a sequel or series. Marketing opportunities can appear well beyond release week.
Purple Diamond Press is building long-term relationships with its authors and its catalogue.
For us, publication is a milestone—not an exit.
What Should You Look for in a Children’s Book Publisher?
Whether an author ultimately chooses Purple Diamond Press or another publishing path, we believe every author should ask serious questions before signing an agreement.
Ask:
* Who owns my copyright?
* What rights am I licensing?
* What exactly am I paying for?
* Which expenses are separate?
* Who will edit my manuscript?
* Who will illustrate and design my book?
* What professional standards must my book meet?
* How will my book actually be distributed?
* Is “worldwide distribution” simply online availability, or is there sales representation?
* What marketing is actually included?
* What happens after publication?
* How and when are royalties reported?
* Can the publisher show me books and authors it has already worked with?
A professional publisher should be prepared to answer those questions.
Publishing Books That Make A Difference
Purple Diamond Press was founded on the belief that children’s books can do more than entertain.
They can help children see themselves. They can introduce children to people whose lives are different from their own. They can encourage curiosity, empathy, kindness, confidence, and meaningful conversations between children and adults.
As we have grown, our capabilities have expanded. Our catalogue has grown. Our authors have grown. Our books have reached classrooms, families, organizations, and communities.
But the standard remains the same:
Publish thoughtfully. Produce professionally. Treat authors fairly. Protect the quality of the book. And create stories worth putting into children’s hands.
That is what publishing means to us.
